The Great War began in August 1914.
In the streets of Britain there was great enthuasism as soldiers set off to fight in France.
The newspapers talked of the war being over by Christmas.
The reality was very different, especially in Western Europe.
By 1916 millions of men were dead and two lines of trenches spread across France and Belgium. Meanwhile there was fighting in many parts of the world: in Turkey and the Middle East, in East and Central Africa, in Central Asia.... and at sea.
In 1916 two great battles took places involving Britain and Germany: on land, the Battle of the Somme. At sea, the Battle of Jutland in the North Sea.

maybe coz they lived ner were thr war started
it could of been because of the people in leyton was a target so the children was in a rush to get out of leyton.
The most effected area was the south eastern areas of the country
During the war, air raids were very frequent in britain, and were mainly targetting London. This could have destroyed many homes of Children.
Also, there was a shortage of food supplies as German submarines kept sinking British ships.
This meant that children had to queue for a long time for food that might never come that day.. therefore missing school.
